RESonance

RESonance

The exhibition explores the uncertain boundary between the artwork and the gaze, and what happens when that boundary can no longer be clearly distinguished.

Where does the artwork end and our interpretation begin?

RESonance brings together works that move between nature, materiality and emotion through markedly different visual languages. Some maintain a direct relationship with their subject; others retain only traces of it, forms that seem familiar without ever becoming fully defined; others appear to resist identification altogether, allowing colour to become the centre of the experience.

This distance is visible in the exhibition space. Less so once we begin to look.

One image settles over another. What we have just seen enters into what comes next. Correspondences emerge that no one has established, affinities between works belonging to distant languages and imaginaries.

The works have not changed. Our gaze has.

Nature seen through one artist remains in our eyes when we encounter that of another; matter takes on different meanings; emotion finds forms that did not previously belong to it. A form travels across the room and seems to belong to more than one place. It appears in one work, returns elsewhere or at least, so it seems.

The boundary continually shifts between what is present in the artwork and what we project onto it.

RESonance takes shape within this unstable territory, where what the works explore continues to transform through the gaze of those who encounter them.

Where do I end and the artwork begin?
