The Need for Beauty

La Necesidad de la Belleza

Il Bisogno di Bellezza

When did we stop needing beauty?
All you have to do is walk through the streets of Barcelona to notice how much our relationship with beauty has changed. There are corners where even the most ordinary things seem to have been made with the desire to make them more beautiful: a façade, a balcony, a streetlamp, a bench. These details may serve no practical purpose, yet they change the way we look at a street, the way we experience it. Today, many of the things around us have lost precisely this quality: they no longer need to be beautiful, they simply need to work.

We have separated what is useful from what is beautiful, as though the two were incompatible, and beauty has been relegated to something we can afford only once everything else has already been taken care of.

And yet we continue to seek it, in the things we buy, the places we choose to go, the clothes we wear, the people we love, the homes we live in. Beauty continues to shape our choices, even though we have stopped thinking of it as a need.

This contradiction says a great deal about our relationship with beauty. Perhaps we consider it unnecessary, while at the same time we are surrounded by images constantly telling us what to desire. After seeing the same things again and again, we begin to recognize them as beautiful almost without thinking.

We mostly choose what we know to be beautiful in the eyes of others. And when that choice carries a certain status with it, it becomes even harder to let go of. But we forget that conformity has its own power, while choosing not to conform is powerful in itself.

This is where art plays a crucial role, leaving room for a different, personal choice. An artwork enters our homes because we want it in our lives, because we like it, because it stopped us, because we keep wanting to look at it. Not because it needs to please others, but because it speaks to us.

So why do we need beauty?

To celebrate life. To give something back to a world that was not given to us simply to inhabit, but to admire, experience, transform, and love.

The truth is, we never stopped needing beauty. We simply forgot.
